How Clear Aligners Move Teeth

Clear aligners work by applying gentle, controlled pressure to gradually guide your teeth into their ideal positions. The process is safe, comfortable, and carefully planned to suit your unique smile.

At Z Dental, we begin with a detailed digital scan of your teeth. From this, we create a custom treatment plan and a series of aligners, each slightly different from the last. You’ll wear each set for around 1 to 2 weeks, with each one making small adjustments to the alignment of your teeth.

Over time, these movements add up to a straighter, more balanced smile without the need for metal brackets or wires.

What to Expect from Start to Finish

Step 1

Consultation & Assessment

Your journey begins with a friendly, in-depth consultation at our practice. This is your chance to tell us what you’d like to change about your smile, whether it’s straightening crowded teeth, closing gaps or correcting bite issues.

We’ll examine your teeth, gums and bite, and talk through your suitability for clear aligners. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, explore what the treatment involves, and decide whether it’s the right option for you. If clear aligners are a good fit, we’ll move on to your digital assessment.

Step 2

Digital Scan and Personalised Treatment Plan

Using our advanced intraoral scanner, we’ll take a precise 3D digital scan of your teeth, no messy impressions required. This scan allows us to map out the exact movements your teeth need to make and design a fully personalised treatment plan.

You’ll also get a sneak preview of your future smile with a digital simulation showing how your teeth will move over time and what the final result will look like. Once you’re happy, your custom aligners will be ordered.

Step 3

Fitting Your Aligners and Starting Treatment

Once your aligners are ready, you’ll return to the practice to have your first set fitted. We’ll show you how to wear and care for them, including how to remove them, clean them, and track your progress.

You’ll wear each set of aligners for around 1 to 2 weeks, for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. Each new set will move your teeth a little further and you’ll start seeing changes in your smile within weeks.

Throughout your treatment, we’ll schedule regular check-ins (either in-person or virtually) to make sure everything is progressing as planned and make any adjustments if needed.

Step 4

Completing Treatment and Maintaining Your Smile

Once you’ve worn your final set of aligners and we’re both happy with your result, it’s time to reveal your new smile. In some cases, we may recommend a short refinement stage with additional aligners to perfect the outcome.

To protect your results long term, we’ll provide you with a set of retainers to wear at night. These prevent your teeth from shifting back and help keep your smile straight and stable for years to come.

You’ll also receive advice on how to care for your new smile and stay on top of your oral health with regular check-ups and hygiene visits.
